Series Overview
Overlord is a Japanese dark fantasy isekai anime series adapted from the light novels written by Kugane Maruyama and illustrated by so-bin. Produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse and directed by Naoyuki Ito, the anime premiered in the summer of 2015 and went on to span four seasons of thirteen episodes each, alongside several compilation films. It quickly established itself as one of the defining titles of the isekai genre, praised for its mature tone, gruesome stakes, and a premise that subverts the usual hero's journey.\n\nThe series centers on Momonga, a dedicated player of the immersive virtual-reality MMORPG Yggdrasil. On the night the servers are scheduled to shut down forever, he chooses to remain logged in until the very end. But when the clock runs out, he does not return to the real world. Instead, he is transported, body and consciousness, into the game world as his powerful undead avatar, Ainz Ooal Gown. The non-player characters of his guild, the Great Tomb of Nazarick, have come to life with personalities, loyalties, and emotions of their own, treating him as their supreme ruler.\n\nRather than seeking a way home, Ainz embraces his role as an overlord, methodically expanding his influence and testing the limits of his abilities in this strange new reality. The series stands apart for casting an overwhelmingly powerful, morally ambiguous figure as its protagonist, and for the way it explores power, identity, and what it means to lead a faithful but inhuman army. With its fantastic animation, memorable cast of characters, and a uniquely compelling plot, Overlord has won millions of fans worldwide and remains a modern classic of the genre.
